What Is MFA And Why Is It Important?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your Signal account, by requiring both the accounts password and a dynamically generated secondary code to login.
MFA is mandatory on the Signal platform to ensure robust account security and reduce the risk of unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.
How To Set Up MFA?
When you first login to the Signal platform you will be prompted to set up MFA. The setup process is straightforward and should only take a few minutes. Detailed instructions and support resources will be provided on screen to guide you through the set-up process.
- Download Google Authenticator to your mobile device (if you don’t already have it installed).
- Add Signal in the Google Authenticator app by touching the “+” button and selecting scan QR code.
- Scan the QR code that is on the Signal screen.
Signal currently supports the use of Google Authenticator or FreeOTP App on your mobile device for MFA (so you will need to download one of these apps). MFA via email is not currently supported by Signal.
*Other authentication methods will be added in the future. More details will be provided on these when known.
My MFA isn't working; how can I troubleshoot?
- Access the Signal platform and input your username and password.
- When prompted for a one-time MFA password on the screen, open the authenticator app on your mobile device, which will provide you with a one-time MFA password to input into Signal during sign-in.
If this fails.
- Check that you are inputting the correct one-time-password that is associated with your Signal login, this will be generated within the MFA mobile app that you configured during your Signal account creation.
- If issue continue, please Contact Us and our support team can reset your MFA configuration.
- If your MFA configuration has been reset by the Signal support team, you will then need to delete the old configuration from your mobile app. After which, login to the Signal platform and follow the on-screen instructions to set-up MFA.
I can't use MFA, what do I do?
- If your organization uses Single Sign On (SSO), please Contact Us and we can implement this alternate security measure.
- Alternatively, if you are otherwise unable to leverage MFA, we can deactivate it on a user-by-user basis, but this is not recommended for security reasons.
If you have any issues with MFA, please Contact Us.
